Multiple births for Algerian mothers

The woman who was married for three years without getting pregnant, had been taking fertility drugs for six months.

This is the first case of its kind in Algeria for 30 years.

Algiers - An Algerian woman who was told she would never able to have children is doing well in hospital after giving birth to six girls, doctors said on Thursday.

The 27-year-old mother had been receiving fertility treatment for the past three years.

She had been expecting seven children, but one, a boy, died in utero, hospital gynaecologists said.

Both mother and babies are said to be in good health in hospital in Kouba, a suburb to the east of Algiers.

However one doctor admitted that were "some concerns" for the smallest child, weighing just 700 grams, saying that she was suffering from "respiratory problems".

The parents expressed their joy at becoming parents as they had lost all hope of having any children.

"I really wanted a child and God has granted me six!" the mother said.

It is believed that this is Algeria's first multiple birth (more than four) for over thirty years, according to experts quoted on Thursday in the Algerian press.

Her husband works as a simple employee in a public company and lives in Boumerdes. Ten member of his family live in a very small house. “Praise to Allah who offered me six girls. I hope that the State gives me a bigger house so that I can take care of my daughters and educate them to be executives in future”, said Ferhat Tawil to Echourouk. He thanks all workers in health sector of Kouba chiefly the director, nurses, doctors and cleaning ladies for helping him.

April 23 2007 -- A woman from El-Harrach (Algiers) has given birth to four babies in Mustapha Pasha Hospital in Algiers.

Karima Sassi had a caesarean. She is now in good health, doctors said.

Echorouk’s reporter has tried to call professor Hadda who supervised the operation but he was busy.

The babies are: Amana (1,360kg), Rataj (1,470kg), Wissal (1,570kg) and Nourelhouda (1,430kg). They are all healthy and still under medical surveillance.

As for the social conditions of this family, Karima says she lives with her husband and her daughter Nebrass in one room in El-Harrach (Algiers). She has complained about her financial situation. Her husband Mohamed Sassi works as a dressmaker at his home and she works as an employee in Reghaia’s municipal headoffice in Algiers. Officials have not helped her although they have promised her to solve her housing problem.

Echorouk has offered help to take in charge the babies’ expenses for one year. Karima Sassi was very happy.
