Algiers, June 11, 2007 - An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale shook the northern Algerian region of Boumerdes on Monday, four years after a quake in the same area killed thousands of people, the Algerian geophysics centre CRAAG said.

The epicentre of the quake, felt at 4.56pm (15h56 GMT), was 25km north-west of the coastal town of Zemmouri, east of Algiers, CRAAG said, adding that no injuries or material damage had been reported.

The Boumerdes region was hit by a 6.8-magnitude quake that killed 2 300 people and injured more than 10 000.

Located on the crossroads of Eurasian and African tectonic plates, the northern part of Algeria is vulnerable to earthquakes.
