ALGIERS, Nov 25 (KUNA) -- Two Algerian environmental activists underlined on Saturday significance of the Euro-Arab 2006 Conference on Environment, slated for Kuwait on November 27-29.

KUNA here today, Algerian parliament member Huriya Buherd said the three-day conference and exhibition was a successful initiative to highlight the world's experiences in the protection of the environment.
Buherd, who is also Chairperson of the Society for the Protection of the Algerian Township, stressed the need to draw out a comprehensive vision to push away dangers facing the mankind in general and the environment in particular.
She stressed the necessity to secure a well economic growth to preserve the environment and curb the factors directly affecting this natural climate.
Buherd said the environment was a central and vital issue on the Algerian government's develoment agenda, noting that efforts have been exerted by the education ministry to publicise the environmental behaviour and implant the culture in the individual's daily conduct.
She said it was an obligation to have the civic society institutions, organizations and active societies engulfed in the environmental action, underlining the significant role women can play in the protection of the environment as a vital and collective issue.
She anticipated that the three-day conference would adopt a number of recommendations on the merger of the civic society in the environment action, calling on the Arab countries to make use of the modern technology to have a clean enviroment.
In the meantime, Algerian Minister of Urban Planning and the Environment, Cherif Rahmani, who is the honorary spokesperson for the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, 2006, told
KUNA that the conference bore great responsibility in the preservation of the Arab environment, praising the efforts exerted worldwide to protect the environment.
He also praised Kuwait, host country of the conference, for its efforts in the environmental field and Kuwait's part in the fight against desertification as a grave environmental phenomenon that has begun to sweep the world.
Rahmani said the conference undoubtedly would urge the participants carry out utmost efforts to preserve environment and desertification, which constituted a great danger to mankind.
Rahmani called on participants in the conference to draw out a common vision and define a clear view of problems negatively affecting the environment and to apply a scientific strategy against pollution and prevent environmental deterioration.
He stressed the need for pursuance of a worldwide environmental policy, a matter, he said, which would be tackled during the conference's debates, workshops and open discussions.
Rahmani said environment was a culture that should be transfused, especially on the maintenance of water pollution and the fight against desertification.
