The funds, to be managed by NGOs and specialised UN agencies, are aimed at purchasing foodstuffs, medicines and water, as well as tents and household items for the vulnerable population, according to a communiqué published in Brussels Thursday by the European Commission services.
It recalls that the EU has been the main donor to Sahraoui refugees who have lived for 30 consecutive years in four camps near Tindouf, Algeria.
About 5 million euros of this loan will be devoted to the funding of projects for the improvement of refugees' living conditions, by ensuring their access to basic services such as healthcare, water and garbage management. Tents and sanitary products will also be provided to Sahraoui refugees.
The other half is to cover their needs in basic food and provide them with fresh products such as fruits, vegetables and meat, for one year.
Since 1993, the European Union has allocated up to 133 million euros for humanitarian aid to Sahraoui refugees.
