May 25, 2007 -- Algerian Health Minister, Mr. Amar Tou announced, on May 25th, a training program for 35,000 doctors and nurses in the next three years.
He said 2,100 specialist doctors, of whom 67% are women, were sent to all the wilayas (provinces) to perform their job.
On the other hand, the minister revealed the ongoing preparation steps for salaries concerning the medical sector.
He said the measures would be finished by the end of the current year.
As for the training, Mr. Tou said the majority of the trainees would be doctors. 5,000 specialist doctors and 15,000 general practitioners in addition to 15,000 nurses will be involved in the training, according to the minister.
He added that 2,300 jobs would be offered to general practitioners and 6,000 jobs to nurses.
In this regard, he said 4,000 nurses would be trained in the next two years.
For its part, the Nurses’ Union believes that 200,000 nurses are necessary to perform good work.
It’s worth mentioning that a large number of doctors have refused to work in hospitals located in the south of Algeria, which has led the health minister to make that an obligation if several doctors did not want to go to the south.
